Masterworks of Art & Architecture: Undiscovered Luxembourg & Patrician Belgium
Start Date: September 04, 2010
End Date: September 14, 2010
Trip Status: Open

Our program begins with three nights in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, staying at the centrally located Hotel Le Royal. Discover the city’s architectural and artistic riches, including those at I.M. Pei’s Museum of Modern Art. We will also enjoy an excursion to Trier, whose cathedral, museum and market have retained all the appeal of medieval Germany.

Then travel into Belgium’s Wallonia region, described by Ernest Hemingway as “something out of a Grimm’s fairytale.” Spend two nights at Chateau d’Hassonville, once the hunting palace of Louis XIV. In Dinant, visit the convent where the early medieval Treasury of Oignies is now kept, and outside the town see an 18th-century garden of great charm. Stroll through the unspoiled Old Town in Namur and tour a museum devoted to the works of a spectacularly quirky artist, Felicien Rops.

No visit to Belgium would be complete without Brussels, where we will spend four nights at the Hotel Amigo, adjacent to the Grand Place. Highlights include a special reception at the newly-opened Magritte Museum and a fascinating visit underneath the Place Royale to discover the remains and a private tour of the landmark Hotel Sôlvay, a restored Art Nouveau residence.

An optional postlude is arranged in Bruges, a perfectly preserved medieval gem laced with canals and gardens.
